The end of December is a popular time for couples to get engaged. There is pressure to find the perfect diamond ring that signifies the value of the women’s life to the man. While the ring is representative of the value of the love in the relationship, nothing can replace the value of the life of the person, or both people, for that matter. Even for those who are not engaged or married, knowing that the value of their human life is given by God, not by any human person, helps put the world into perspective and God who created it—God who is over the world, everyone on Earth, and all the stars and planets in the entire universe.
In December, Christians celebrate Jesus’ birth. His life was primarily here for that purpose to let us know that each of us is important and loved by God. The value of human life is important in that God sent Jesus so that humans could be worthy of God’s forgiveness and have eternal life with Him in heaven. Humankind could never make reparation for our sin on our own to God. Jesus had to make up the difference. He makes our contriteness perfect and our thanksgiving worthy to God. The value of life in the one baby of Jesus was of immense, divine value. His life was for the value of all of humankind.
When you are shopping for gifts this holiday season, step back and think about more than the obligation to find a present. See the beauty in the person you are giving the gift for and what you appreciate about them. We all are gifts, and oftentimes we don’t recognize all the good qualities in others. You might consider buying a gift to give such as a painting or jewelry, that captures the heart of the beauty and value of the person. Or you might make a gift giving from the heart. Whatever you do, remember that the value of each life is priceless and God’s love invaluable.
