AirBNB Stays

Book a stay using AirBNB. AirBNB hosts travelers in homes throughout the United States and internationally.

Enjoy the comforts of being at home, while you are away from home. You may be looking for a private get-away to spend some time with your significant other, a place for your next family reunion, or as a place to live for a few days in a different setting. Homeowners list their homes on AirBNB and prepare a room or the entire house as lodging for guests. Hosts are welcoming to guests accommodating for everything needed during their stay including towels, bedding, extra food and toiletries, and recommendations to local landmarks and tourist sites.

A few years ago I used AirBNB and booked a few stays throughout the Dallas area. Booking a stay was easy. Searching a city for listings during a certain time range, I was able to see what listings were available. AirBNB shows listings on a map with price markers that can be clicked on to show details and photos of the home. The listing’s page also shows the details of the price including cleaning fees, extra guest fees, and other added on costs. Everything is paid for in advance. After booking a stay, I was able to locate the home on a map and then travel to the home to arrive by check-in time.

Hosts were very friendly at all of the places I stayed at. Only one place did not have a host, but there were details of where I could find the key. Many of the places have keyless entries with codes set on the door. I was welcomed when I arrived, shown to my room, and asked if I needed anything. I typically did not see the homeowners much. Whether they lived on property or not, they were usually not home. In some of the homes, there were multiple AirBNB guests. We might share the kitchen or bathroom, but for the most part everyone stayed to themselves. Everyone was friendly and professional. There never was a concern for safety within the house or with other guests. If anything was needed, the hosts were happy to see what they could do to provide it, if at all possible.

Just recently I came to Oklahoma and had a chance to help with preparing and renovating several AirBNB homes near Fort Sill Air Force Base. Ft. Sill is 81 miles southwest of Oklahoma City and 54 miles north of Wichita Falls, TX. With a city population of 100,000, it retains it’s small town feel, but has all of the major businesses to be found in any city such as Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, Lowes, Big Lots, DollarTree, Aldi, and local food establishments. Almost everything is within a couple of miles. Lawton, Oklahoma is home to Ft. Sill, Cameron University, the Wichita Mountains Wildlife Refuge, and 3 lakes including Lake Lawtonka, Lake Ellsworth, and Elmer Thomas Lake. There are also several museums including the Museum of the Great Plains, The Fort Sill Museum, and The Comanche National Museum and Cultural Center. One landmark you won’t want to miss is Elmer Thomas Park with its Patriot Pavilion and tributes throughout the park to the United States and those who have served. This park also has hundreds of prairie dogs who live in burrowed holes and pop out above ground to greet visitors.

There are 5 AirBNB homes in Lawton, OK which are within a mile or more radius of each other owned by the same owner. Three of the AirBNBs are cottages with the traditional stoned exterior to the houses which is characteristic of the pioneers who first settled in Oklahoma. The Carobelle Cottage is a beautiful cottage which is cozy and spacious. It has wooden floors, a modern kitchen, long kitchen table in the dining room, a living room which can seat 8 people with a TV and a remote control operated fireplace, 3 bedrooms with queen sized beds, two single beds, and a crib area, and an outdoor hot tub. This home can host up to 10-12 people. Hunterston Cottage, has a rustic feel to it with its hardwood floors, a large dining table, a family style kitchen, living room with 3 couches and TV, enclosed colorful front patio, and 2 bedrooms with queen sized beds. It sleeps four people. The home is decorated with one of the world’s largest collections of weeping gold Savoy China, as well as other art collectables, and a cubby filled with a collection of tea. The large yard has wooden lawn chairs for relaxing and enjoying the outdoors with stacks of firewood in the background and an outdoors barn shed. The Cameron Cottage, located off of Ft. Sill just a few blocks from The Cameron Cottage, is under construction with plans to be ready later in 2021. This cottage was just recently purchased and is currently being renovated. It has 3 bedrooms, hardwood floors throughout the home, a living area with a piano and oversized couch, a formal dining area, dining nook, and a kitchen.

Besides the 3 cottages, there are two themed AirBNB homes: The Pumpkin and The Wizard World Cottage. The Pumpkin which is painted pumpkin orange on the exterior, and decorated with themed pumpkins and owls on the inside, is available for AirBNB bookings and sleeps 9 people. The interior of the cottage walls are painted in varying shades of pumpkin orange throughout the home. This cottage has two queen sized beds, three single beds (2 of which are a bunk bed and the other a daybed with trundle), one full sized bed, and a crib. The kitchen with an industrial feel to it is nested in the middle of the house complete with all kitchen utensils. It shares space with a full sized washer and dryer in the same room. Outside there is a bonfire pit and grill that guests can enjoy. The living room has a collection of colored miniature owls around the perimeter of the room along ceiling high shelving. There are large comfortable couches for visiting and a TV. The dining room just inside the entryway is across from the living room. The home is decorated with macrame owls, ceramic owl artwork, and paintings that match the theme of the home.

The Wizard World Cottage, is scheduled to be open the first week in January. This home has a fantasy theme to it—one of unicorns, wizards, and Harry Potter. The house has dark brown hardwood floors throughout the home. With its modern feel to it, the bathroom which recently was remodeled, has stainless steel fixtures and a newly tiled shower and. The shower is made of black and white tile and is decorated with purple stained glass colored tile. It is in the same style of the bathrooms found in the The Pumpkin Cottage. The kitchen is decorated in black, purple, and white with unicorn and silver curtains. The color scheme is carried throughout the kitchen with purple kitchen utensils, and two colors of purple colored pots and pans stored on white shelves above the counter space, and a purple hand painted back splash wall made of tile that stretches the length of the kitchen. The magical theme continues throughout the home with painted doors in varying tints of purple, matching curtains, and a unicorn shower curtain in the bathroom. Guests can relax sitting on the newly-upholstered plush, purple couches with large over-sized pillows made of purple colored shimmery fabric in the living room and watch TV or visit. The dining room has a low vaulted ceiling with a beautiful wooden table that seats 8 people. Themed artwork is being selected to decorate the home. This home sleeps 5 people with a king sized bed, a full-sized bed and a single bed.

REI Camp Gear

Love to camp? or are you camping for survival? Here is a list of products for those who live outside.

The REI brand is known for their high-quality gear for life outdoors. Carrying bulky gear can be cumbersome when traveling and can take up a lot of unnecessary space. REI specializes in selling high quality products, constructed with the lightest weight material, which are ideal for a variety of travel conditions. Whether you are shopping for camping & hiking gear or for outdoors fitness, REI’s products are durable and are weather resistant. Additionally, REI offers a life-time warranty with most of their products.

I was introduced to REI twenty years ago when planning for an international trip to Rome, Italy. The World Youth Day gathering of young adults included a week-long schedule of events leading up to the final event outside where all 2.5 million attendees camped outdoors overnight. As I was traveling for a couple of weeks to 5 countries, I was not sure how to pack for a camping trip on top of everything I had to bring with me. I discovered REI and instantly became enthused with all of the products they have available. Two of my favorite REI products I purchased then, I still have today: a light-weight sleeping bag and a travel pillow. These products were perfect to travel with on this trip and other trips. I’ve also used them extensively the last couple of years as I’ve been in housing transition and without housing the last couple of years living in my car in extreme hot and cold weather. With their compact and light-weight size, these travel bedding essentials take up minimal amount of space in storage. As an easy solution for any type of situation, these products are easy to wash and dry quickly. I’ve used them camping outdoors, at shelters on top of cots, mats, on beds in rooms I’ve rented for a few weeks, airbeds, and in my car.

The sleeping bag has a hooded area, comes with zipper pockets so you can stay warm and still stick your arm out of the sleeping bag. It also has an opening at the bottom of the bag which you can stick your feet through. The main zipper on the sleeping bag just broke earlier this summer after it’s long dedication to keeping me warm. REI offers a repair service available to fix gear, but I’m looking forward to my next sleeping bag! Although this exact sleeping bag is no longer available, REI has a comparable sleeping bag available as well as others to choose from. I also recommend the travel pillow, which is the neatest little pillow. It takes up minimum space and when the drawstring is pulled it compacts into a small sized ball. It is so soft and comfortable. Both of these items are washable. I throw them in the wash and just keep an eye on them in the dryer to preserve the material, but both dry quickly.

REI has since updated their product line with a similar sleeping bag and pillow. The REI Co-op Helio Sack 50 Sleeping Bag is perfect for travel and backpacking. With its insulation, this light-weight sleeping bag is perfect for 50 degrees (F) weather. The long side unzips into a quilt while the short side-zip works as both a vent and an armhole. The hood and neck of the bag have an adjustable drawstring to stay snug and warm. The water repellent (DWR) finish on the polyester shell resists moisture and stains. It compresses easily for storage. It is well-worth the $69.95 – $79.95 price.

REI sells a Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow that compresses to 1/5 of the size of the pillow which is 18″ x 14″. This pillow is similar to the compressible pillow I have which is no longer available. The Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow is a ‘must-have’ for any traveler. Take it on a camping trip, road trip, or as you travel on an airplane. It is washable, super-soft, and compacts nicely into it’s own bag. As soft pillow for under $30 that you can take anywhere this is a great buy for $26.95 – $29.95.

An additional product I recommend is the 32 fl. oz, Nalgene Wide-Mouth Water Bottle. I learned about this bottle when I was preparing to travel to Honduras on a mission trip. Ever since then I have continued to buy this bottle when I need a replacement. It comes in handy in the summertime when it gets hot here in Texas. I also make sure I keep it in the car. I have used it when I’ve travelled and for outdoor sports to stay hydrated when biking or hiking. Since I’ve been in housing transition and have been homeless this past year, I have two bottles which I keep in the car and fill up every day at least once. I save money by not buying bottled water as frequently and I can always make sure there is water in the car at all times and for any emergency. The bottle holds 32 oz of water and has marks on the size to indicate the ounces. With 2 of these bottles, I know I just need to drink at least 2 bottles a day to make sure I drink enough water for the day. The bottle is impact resistant made of thick durable plastic and has an attached screw cap. I add a straw to make it easy to sip from. The bottle retails at only $11.95. Stay hydrated by keeping one in your car, take it to work, or on your next trip!

Spring Into Kindness: International Reach

As a country that has access to the best resources, it is easy to take for granted being able to purchase almost anything we need or want at any time. With rows of brands of the same type of item in supermarkets, we have a wide selection to choose from, and within a reasonable price range—granted, not when under national emergency crisis, but even still there are options. With the convenience of having a gas station or major retail store within a few miles, if not on every corner, shopping is a natural part of everyday life. We don’t think much of spending or spending spontaneously to buy items when we are so inclined. In fact, most of what is purchased is what entices us rather than what we need to get by. Waving the flag of consumerism based on capitalism, not every country is as fortunate. Many people in the United States do not consider how stretching a little by chiseling micro-luxuries from everyday expenditures can substantially make a difference in the life of another. Donating to help another person’s life in an impoverished country which does not have these options, let alone the resources available, can bring relief.

There are plenty of organizations which have the specific mission to assist those in other countries. Supplying food is probably one of the top philanthropical missions of international non-profits, but other organizations help assist with housing, building, and other missionary efforts. One of the best ways to get first-hand experience with how others in the world live is to join a group traveling to another country with a mission to lend-a-hand. Many organizations such as Peace Corp, UNICEF, World Vision, Love the Children, and others service other countries in the world. Churches organize mission trips which you can be part of to travel overseas and help within 3rd world communities. Take the risk and have your eyes opened with a fresh view of all we have and the ease we have to obtain what we need. Pulling away from everyday life here in the United States which we are accustomed to and experiencing places which may not have food, water, electricity, or clothing resources as we have, will create an awareness to the daily life of others in the world with their attitudes and outlook. It also generates a new set of eyes for those who are lacking resources in our very own communities with a new understanding of survival and what assistance can be provided.

Global efforts around the world are just as diversified as the people they serve. There are organizations for the environment, social change, children, special needs, women, business leaders, and other world-wide revolutionary efforts.

As you put your action plan together to spring into kindness this Spring, consider ways you can donate, volunteer remotely, and ways you can travel abroad to help. Giving a few dollars a month to fund world-wide charity organizations can make a significant difference in providing a daily meal for someone. What could be more interesting than using your talents abroad helping in person! If you haven’t had the chance to travel abroad with a non-profit to help others, consider researching options and plan an adventure this year to spread your kindness across the globe. Make a difference. Reach and spring this Spring, with kindness.
